I'm Charlene Burke and for the last 10 years I've been building my business and creating a few online businesses in different niche markets.
I decided to create this blog to share my knowledge about online business, internet marketing, and business in the 21st century.
I started my primary business in June, 2008, and set it up to be a virtual, service based business. Shortly after I set it up the recession hit and my phone stopped ringing, the emails stopped, and I got dead silence from my social media messages.
In early 2009 I turned my business into an internet marketing agency and began helping existing clients with all things internet marketing:
- website creation (WordPress)
- email marketing
- social media marketing
- advertising online
- content marketing (before it was called that)
- some video marketing (YouTube),
- training on all things internet marketing
- general marketing strategy and consulting
I found myself networking in person locally, using social media, and email marketing to get new clients. It worked. I had a sustainable business that supported my family. I hated it. But, as with all things that matter, I did the work that needed to be done so we could pay the bills for the house and food and have a bit extra for entertainment.
What did I hate?
Selling. Those in-person networking events were killing me. 1:1 presentations and sales calls were extremely stressful and not very good.
Doing the work for other people. Unless the client was fully on board and excited about the possibilities the internet offered, it was a bear working with them.
During this time I hosted a small business conference in 2012 in Indianapolis, Indiana. That's where I realized that live events are extremely profitable and extremely stressful. I was asked to do it again in 2013 but declined. It's not what I wanted to be doing with my business.
I was the SEO Advisor for the Small Business Development Center. I worked with a few local businesses to get them up to speed on SEO and also provided guidance about internet marketing. I taught SBDC workshops around the area about SEO and internet marketing.
In 2010 I partnered with a social media expert and we started Online Marketing Pros. We offered hands on training … bring your laptop to the class and we walked you through internet marketing topics. Blogging, SEO, Build a WordPress Site, LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Content Marketing, Email Marketing. This was local in a wonderful shared office space.
I've been teaching and training others about Social Selling, Email Marketing, SEO, WordPress, LinkedIn, Facebook, Social Media Marketing since 2009 via webinar and in person. I know the business of doing business online.
In 2015 I made the decision to alter my business and get out of offering Done For You services. I also wanted to get out of marketing for others. By 2017, I returned my business to what I love – research, mastermind and accountability group management, writing.
In 2018 I realized that I wanted to focus any and all internet marketing efforts on my own niche sites. I wanted to begin creating passive income by using the skills and knowledge I have and have been teaching others.
This is one of those sites.
This is the only place online where I am sharing my marketing and internet marketing knowledge.
